Why would God lead His people into the wilderness for 40 years when He could have taken them directly to the Promised Land?

In Part 1 of Stories from the Desert, The Debrief: Why the 40 Years?, Jay Hohfeler explores the purpose behind Israel’s wilderness journey and what those years reveal about Who God is and how He works in our lives.

Through the lens of Deuteronomy 8, Jay examines how God used the desert to humble His people, test their hearts, and teach them to depend on Him. What appeared to be a season of wandering was actually a time of intentional preparation, spiritual growth, and transformation.

Just as God worked through Israel’s 40 years in the wilderness, He continues to use seasons of suffering, uncertainty, disappointment, and waiting to reveal what is in our hearts and draw us into a deeper relationship with Him.

In this teaching, we explore:

  • Why God allowed Israel to spend 40 years in the wilderness.
  • How God uses difficult circumstances to humble us and reveal what is in our hearts.
  • The difference between simply enduring suffering and allowing God to transform us through it.
  • Why spiritual deserts can expose the false sources of security and significance we depend on.
  • How God's provision, discipline, and presence reveal His faithful character.
  • What Moses' journey teaches us about preparation, dependence, and trusting God's timing.
  • Why God's ultimate purpose is not simply to change our circumstances, but to deepen our relationship with Him.
